George F. Brasfield, Jr., letters to his parents and medals [manuscript],, 1930-1931, 1947-1953.

Brasfield's letters, 1953 April 9-August 30, a Second Lieutenant in the First Marine Division in the Korean War, describes life in his mortar platoon. He mentions a prisoner exchange, peace talks, balking by Syngman Rhee and armistice, General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, destitution of Korean people, and track and pole vaulting and "Easters" celebrations at the University of Virginia. He also briefly mentions Mel Roach, a University of Virginia alum who played for the Milwaukee Braves. With the collection are 22 track and field medals, 1930-1931, 1947-1951, chiefly for pole vaulting, awarded to the Brasfields Sr. and Jr. at prep school meets. George F.
